ความหมายของ ไอที
IT ย่อมาจาก information technology แปลว่า เทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศ หมายถึงเทคโนโลยีในการรวบรวมข้อมูล การจัดเก็บอย่างมีระบบ การเรียกหาข้อมูลได้อย่างรวดเร็ว การประมวลผล การวิเคราะห์ผลที่ได้จากการประมวลนั้น รวมไปถึงการเน้นในเรื่องการแสดงผล และประชาสัมพันธ์สารสนเทศนั้นอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ ในรูปแบบที่เหมาะสมกับผู้ที่จะนำไปใช้ต่อไป ตลอดไปจนถึงการสื่อสารข้อมูลนั้นไปยังหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ด้วย ว่ากันว่า IT กำลังจะก้าวเข้ามาแทนวิชา MIS (management information system) เพราะมีขอบเขตกว้างขวางกว่ามาก สรุปสั้น ๆ ได้ว่า เป็นเหมือนการนำวิชาวิทยาการคอมพิวเตอร์ (computer science) รวมกับนิเทศศาสตร์ (mass communications)
